Prince Muhammad Ali Palace (Manual Palace) This edifice, conceived by the illustrious Prince Muhammad Ali, stands as a testament to his legacy. The palace, now a repository of history, comprises six distinct edifices: the Reception Palace, the Clock Tower, the Mosque, the Hunting Museum, the Presidential Palace, and the Private Museum. Each structure is resplendently adorned, encircled by lush gardens.
Garbage City in Cairo Carved into the Mokattam mountain in 1976, this enclave harbors the largest ecclesiastical structure in Egypt, and indeed the Middle East, accommodating 20,000 souls. Every Sunday, the Christian populace of Cairo congregates here. To reach the monastery, one must navigate through Zabbaleen, a quarter dedicated entirely to the city's waste management, inhabited by the refuse collectors. The pungent atmosphere is a testament to its authenticity. From the heights of Mokattam, an expansive panorama of Cairo unfolds.
City of the Dead A juxtaposition of life and death, this necropolis is inhabited by the living, with residents dwelling amidst the tombs, transforming mausoleums into domiciles.
Baron Empain Palace For aficionados of antiquated architecture, the Baron Empain Palace offers a spectacle of reinforced concrete in a Hindu-inspired style, reminiscent of Angkor Wat. Conceived by a French architect, this palace was once the abode of a Belgian industrial magnate who ventured to Egypt for a railway enterprise. Legends abound, suggesting that the baron’s spirit still roams its halls.
Lunch We shall pause to savor a meal, allowing time to replenish our energies. Lunch will be served in a local restaurant, showcasing traditional Egyptian cuisine (excluding beverages).
Islamic Quarter A favored haunt of mine within Cairo is this historic quarter. Al-Muizz Street is a veritable open-air museum, lined with ancient mosques, Islamic academies, palaces, and bathhouses.
Khan El Khalili Bazaar Our journey culminates in the bustling Khan El Khalili, the iconic bazaar of Cairo. This vibrant market throngs with tourists and locals, pulsating as the very heart of the city. Lose yourself in the myriad stalls, where an array of local crafts awaits discovery.
